A Day Of Pride
Happy Pride everyone!
I enjoy the atmosphere of Pride events; they're accepting, non-judgmental, and uplifting. No matter how big or how small the event is, you can feel at home. Don't get me wrong, there are some cons to going to an event like Pride, especially ones larger than average. The excessively loud atmosphere and people rustling around like termites in a wooden furniture store is enough to make even the largest lion turn into a mouse.
Despite this and many other factors (like the increased risk of having sensory overloads), the welcoming smiles and overall caring auras of others are enough to make up for it. Some Prides also have quiet zones for those who find events overwhelming - like me. They often have sensory toys and relaxing instruments for anyone to use, including those with anxiety and those who are neurodivergent.
Pride wasn't always large and commercialized. As you all probably know, it started with one group of people trying to make a difference in improving the rights of the LGBTQ+ Community. Those who were involved in the Stonewall Riots, and others, started a parade to fight for the freedom to love who you love and be who you are. I'd like to think some Prides still do that. Prides this year have been fighting to end conversion therapy and improve Trans* rights. As a Transgender Male, it was my honour to support Pride this year and every year.
This year, me and my partner compared (introduced acts) on the stage at my local Pride event. My local Pride is a family-based event and was founded by a youth led team. It was amazing to see everyone being so supportive of each other and enjoying themselves. Hopefully, this blog will help you feel more accepted in your identity. No matter who you are, how you identify, or what you look like, know that I am proud of you and everything you have achieved.
Stay safe and stay well, Jace
